Stress happens – the car won’t start, the kids are over-sleeping, conflict at work, the temperature and humidity are rising, new project at work, violence in the news and nearby frighten you, disagreement with your spouse, traffic jam when you are late, and the list goes on. Being alive means that we are experiencing stress. Stress can be “good” or “bad”.
Good stress are things like a new baby, a new job, or a new love. Bad stress includes inconveniences, struggles, and traumas. Stress can become debilitating when we rely on not so helpful methods like beers after work, a bag of chocolate, letting it all out on your partner, and avoidance. These methods work in the short-run but in the long-run, there are consequences.
Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is an 8-week course with a one-day retreat designed to increase our awareness of our habitual methods and the consequences, as well as learn new methods that can free us up. MBSR will introduce or deepen student’s understanding of mindfulness practices such as mindfulness meditation and mindful awareness activities. Each week, we engage in meditation, yoga and mindful reflection. The MBSR stress model help us understand the ways in which our brain and biology can keep us stuck in a stress reactivity cycle, as well as explore methods for becoming more choiceful vs. reactive when we inevitably find ourselves amid stress again.
Past students of MBSR have provided this feedback:
“I am more kind and gentle with myself and with my children. I feel like we have a new relationship.”
“I am discovering how powerful my thoughts are and how they prevent me from living in the present moment.”
“I have tools for the rest of my life to manage stress, to step back and observe difficult situations and then make a better choice of action using the tools.”
“Really special experience.”
“Having the group was incredibly beneficial and the time to process after settling in with yoga or meditation created and environment of greater depth and thoughtfulness.”
“The silent retreat was beyond expectations.”
“Home is shifting to a calmer place”.
